Overview
|
The USC Graphics researchers, with dozens of graduate students and research staff,
are conducting cutting-edge research in three broad areas of computer graphics (Augmented Reality, Computer Animation, and Image-based Modeling, Rendering and Lighting).
Additionally, USC Graphics researchers are closely and actively cooperating with experts in special effects and gaming industry at southern california area.
Three focused directions:
- Augmented Reality, including augmented virtual environment, tracking for augmented reality, and gesture interaction.
- Computer Animation, including facial animation and modeling, hair modeling, and fluid simulation.
- Image-Based Modeling, Rendering and Lighting, including image-based modeling, rendering and lighting, 3D scanning, and high dynamic range imaging.

Current Research Projects
 Facial Animation and Modeling
|
Facial animation is one of the most challenging research topics in graphics field, and it has wide applications in CG movie, video games, virtual reality, communications, etc. In this direction, we have attempted
various research efforts, including expression cloning, human hair modeling and animation, data-driven facial animation synthesis, Reducing Blendshape Interference, and expressive speech synthesis.
|
 Augmented Virtual Environment
|
We focus on the general problems of visualization of multiple image/video/data streams, robust tracking technology for unprepared environment, and detailed geometric model refinement and segmentation. We address basic algorithm research and testbed implementation that are feasible with current or near term technology,
including Sensor fusion for outdoor tracking, LiDAR model reconstruction and scene segmentation, Real-time video texture projection, and 6DOF Auto-calibration technology and model refinement.

 Image-Based Modeling, Rendering and Lighting
|
A powerful technique for creating photorealistic computer graphics is to build CG models directly from photographic imagery. Image-based techniques
capture realistic geometry, reflectance properties, and lighting conditions from people, objects, and environments, and new techniques are making it
possible to combine image-based models with traditional computer graphics models and to capture photoreal data of geometry, reflectance, and lighting
in real time. [Project website]

 Fluid Simulation
|
Fluid dynamics describes the behavior of smoke, steam, water pouring into a container, ocean waves, fire, clouds, explosions, and many other phenomena that appear frequently in movies, video games, and virtual reality simulations.
This project investigates better techniques to model and control fluid simulations.
